Account for the rise of association football as a mass spectator sport in Britain - the context

What's all this about then? This page sets the context for an essay on the rise of football, and should help place when it was written and why...

Why did I write this?

It was part of a first year University course on the Development of Modern Britain, and out of the list of possible questions, this was the obvious one that caught my eye!

When was it written?

February 1996.

What happened to it?

It got a middling mark and a fair amount of comments from the lecturer. Nothing to worry about, as it didn't count towards my final degree.

Would I change anything about it?

I would have liked to have concentrated more on the modern renaissance of football, but had to stick to the historical context. As it happened, the modern focus drew criticism as it was.

Still want to read it? It's right here.
